WE’RE HIRING
Soundsat is a European Space & Defense technology company building an AI-powered maritime intelligence platform that transforms data from sea, space, and shore into actionable insights.
The platform combines underwater acoustic sensing, Earth Observation satellite imagery, vessel data, and terrestrial sensing to detect and analyze maritime activity, including hard-to-track vessels and events.
By fusing multiple independent data sources, Soundsat supports earlier detection, improved situational awareness, and evidence-based decision-making across safety, security, environmental monitoring, critical infrastructure protection, and ocean operations.
The company is creating a new intelligence layer for the ocean through a unified data and AI architecture that connects distributed sensors and space-based assets. Based in Portugal, Soundsat collaborates with European space, maritime, and technology ecosystems and aims to become a leading European maritime and multi-domain intelligence platform.
We’re growing the engineering team and hiring software engineers across four specialist tracks that make up the EOS module architecture. You’ll work closely with our Head of Engineering and the rest of the team building each module end to end — from data ingestion to the decision layer operators actually use.
This is a full-time, on-site Software Engineer role based in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. The Software Engineer will design, implement, and maintain backend services and data-processing pipelines that power SoundSat’s maritime intelligence platform. Responsibilities include developing robust, scalable software components, integrating data from diverse sensors and satellite sources, and collaborating with data science and product teams to deliver new features. The role involves writing clean, well-documented code, performing code reviews, troubleshooting and optimizing system performance, and contributing to architectural and technology decisions. The Software Engineer will also help improve development workflows, testing practices, and deployment processes to ensure reliability and security in production environments.
Strong foundation in Computer Science and Software Development, with solid understanding of algorithms, data structures, and system design.
Proficiency in Programming and Object-Oriented Programming (OOP), including experience with at least one modern programming language commonly used in backend systems.
Hands-on experience in Back-End Web Development, building APIs and services, and working with databases and distributed systems.
Experience with version control, automated testing, and CI/CD tools, and familiarity with cloud or container-based deployment environments.
Ability to collaborate in cross-functional teams, communicate technical concepts clearly, and contribute to a supportive, inclusive work environment.
Relevant degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Interest in maritime, space, or geospatial technologies is beneficial; experience with data-intensive or AI-enabled platforms is a plus.
Comfort working in an international setting; professional proficiency in English is required, and Portuguese language skills are an advantage.
Experience in defence, maritime, or space-adjacent industries.
Familiarity with geospatial tooling and standards.
Soundsat builds EOS, a maritime surveillance and defence (dual-use) platform that fuses acoustic sensing, satellite and airborne asset tasking, Earth observation imagery, and AI-driven decision support to detect and respond to anomalies at sea. We’re a Portugal-based team building EOS from an initial deployment toward a full modular platform for maritime domain awareness.
Tell us in your application which track (or tracks) you’re most drawn to – you don’t need experience in all four.
We’re hiring Software Engineers across four tracks.
I. Acoustic & In-Situ Sea-Data Detection
Building the early-detection layer:
Acoustic network data analysis and sensor fusion that correlates sound signatures with vessel presence (including “dark vessel” detection where AIS is absent or spoofed).
Core skills: acoustics, SONAR/RADAR fundamentals, data fusion, applied AI & statistics.
You’ll work on: correlating and matching acoustic anomalies against AIS vessel data, building detection confidence scoring, sensor fusion pipelines.
II. Asset Tasking & Orbital Data
Building the tasking layer:
Matching available imaging/reconnaissance assets (satellites, UAVs, patrol vessels) against detected anomalies and operational windows.Core skills: data ingestion, statistics, RF fundamentals, orbital mechanics & Earth observation basics.
Also relevant: real-time/event-driven systems, concurrency, API & messaging design, authentication/access control, geospatial systems, testing & simulation.
You’ll work on: matching satellite orbits and passes to anomaly locations, building tasking/dispatch workflows across satellites, drones, and maritime assets.
III. Imagery & Video Analysis
Building the imagery layer:
Vessel detection, oil spill and change detection, iceberg and fish-cage identification, and SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) analysis.
Core skills: applied AI, statistics, Earth observation, remote sensing (SAR & optical), drone imagery, neural networks.
Also relevant: computer vision, image data engineering, georeferencing, orthorectification, geospatial systems, hardware acceleration.
You’ll work on: vessel detection in SAR imagery at optimized efficiency, near-real-time (NRT) imagery pipelines, change-detection models
IV. Data Platform & Decision Intelligence
Two closely linked areas:
Data storage, processing, and network infrastructure layer feeding every other module; orchestration/decision layer that fuses their outputs into recommended actions. Open to early-career engineers with strong fundamentals.
Core skills: databases, cloud & IT infrastructure, applied AI/LLMs, neural networks.
Also relevant:
You’ll work on: the infrastructure layer underpinning all modules, and algorithms that identify hotspots and suspicious patterns outside current areas of interest
